After the ‘Data and Language’ conference

The international conference ‘Data and Language: Perspectives on Research in Digital Editions of Historical Sources’ took place on 13–15 November 2024.

The event was organised by the Faculty of History, University of Warsaw; Faculty of Humanities, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, in cooperation with the Digital Initiatives Foundation. The conference took place in the historic Columned Hall of the Faculty of History,
University of Warsaw. The proceedings featured 23 presentations by speakers from 17 Polish and foreign centres (see programme: https://cyfrowa.historia.uw.edu.pl/program-programme/ ).

The conference provided an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences and to present a variety of work related to digital humanities. The proceedings highlighted the breadth of this field. The papers spanned eras from antiquity to the twentieth century and addressed topics such as data, databases, artificial intelligence, language processing models, digitization, visualization, maps, and digital editions — examined from both IT perspectives as well as methodological and visual viewpoints. The papers demonstrated how these diverse elements converge to create research tools for historians, literary scholars, linguists, and representatives of many other disciplines. It became clear that no digital edition is possible without properly processed data, digitized sources, or tools for code or content analysis. The proceedings revealed that each digital project serves as another brick in the ever-evolving foundation of digital humanities.

We hope to further develop this dialogue. To this end, a second edition of the ‘Data and Language’ conference is planned for the future. We cordially invite you to stay updated on this topic and join us!
