Title of the doctoral dissertation
«The Representation of Space in the Greek and Armenian Hagiography of the 5th—10th Centuries»
Research topics
The project investigates the representation of space in Greek and Armenian hagiography from the 5th to the 10th centuries. Examining literary landscapes, it seeks to uncover the mental geography of Greek and Armenian hagiographers, identifying how and why their depictions differed. The focus spans the entire pre-metaphrastic period, aiming to elucidate the principles of landscape description and its role in the divine-saint relationship. Through detailed contextual and comparative analysis, the study explores the uniqueness of the hagiographer's mentality with the help of literary placemaking. It also examines toponymy to reveal cultural specificities and the influence of Greek on Armenian narratives. This research addresses the under-explored spatial aspects in Byzantine and Armenian hagiographies, contributing new insights into the mental universe of their authors and the cultural transfers between their traditions.
