Workshop: Imperium et Communitas
On 13 June 2024, a workshop entitled Imperium et Communitas: Social Dynamics of Foreign Communities between 2nd and 4th Centuries CE in Italy through Inscriptions will be held in the Columned Hall.
The workshop aims to analyse the relationship between the Roman state and the foreign communities living within its borders from the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. The research is based on the analysis of inscriptions (epitaphs, public inscriptions, dedications) preserved from this period. These inscriptions provide valuable information about the daily life, identity, religious beliefs and social structures of these communities.
We want to answer the questions if patterns of making inscriptions travel together with incomers, who is responsible for the making of inscriptions for foreigners, how are different scripts and writing systems adapted in new environments, and what these inscriptions tell us in general about the composition of Roman society in Italy.
