Call for Papers – 30 September 2026

We invite scholars to submit paper proposals for the international conference “Becoming a Citizen in Times of Transformation: Poland, Ukraine and Germany after 1918/19 and 1989/91”, focusing on processes of state-building in Poland, Ukraine and Germany after 1918/19 and 1989/91.

The conference explores how citizens and different social groups appropriated and shaped new states, as well as how emerging state structures influenced and constrained their actions. Contributions are welcome on topics including political, social and cultural activists, civic self-organization movements, institutions and administrations, and international and transnational organizations.

The conference is addressed to scholars working in History, Sociology, Law, Cultural Studies, and other disciplines.
