Ur. 1962; doktorat na UW 1990, habilitacja tamże 2001, tytuł profesora 2013. Zatrudniony w Instytucie Historycznym UW od 1988 kolejno jako asystent, adiunkt, profesor od 2003. Research associate: Harvard University Ukrainian Research Institute 1991-1992; Nahost-Institut an der Universitaet Muenchen 1994-1995. Visiting professor: University of Notre Dame 2004, Hokkaido University 2009, College de France 2011. Członek Akademii Europejskiej (Academia Europaea) i honorowy czlonek Tureckiego Towarzystwa Historycznego (TTK). Prezydent CIEPO (Comite International des Etudes Pre-ottomanes et Ottomanes) 2018-. Pełnomocnik Dyrektora IH ds. Kontaktów Zagranicznych 2002-2008; Dyrektor Instytutu Historycznego 2012-16; Kierownik Zakładu Historii Nowożytnej 2010-13 i 2019-. Zainteresowania badawcze: historia imperiów, granice i pogranicza, historia globalna. Zainteresowania pozanaukowe: nurkowanie, narty, gra na klarnecie.
